CENTRAL & NORTH WEST LONDON (CNWL) MENTAL HEALTH NHS TRUST

1. PATERSON CENTRE FOR MENTAL HEALTH, 20 South Wharf Road, London W2 1PD (Tel: 020 7886 6666)
Parts I & II posts: acute adult psychiatry, liaison/community psychiatry, rehabilitation psychiatry, intensive care psychiatry (Academic Unit)
This purpose-built unit was opened in the late 1970’s, and serves a typical inner-city catchment area. The services are sectorised, and each sector is supported by a community mental health team and care management team, an in-patient ward, a number of day hospital places, and close links are established with local primary care practitioners. Each sector has two consultants, and each consultant has one SHO. Each sector also has an Specialist Registrar slot.
Because the work of the medical team is integral to all activity in the sector, these SHO posts include community as well as in-patient responsibility. Community mental health resource centres are based at 209 Harrow Road (North & South Paddington teams) and at Abbey Road, London NW8 (North Marylebone team).
Apart from general adult community based mental health services, the unit also provides a number of specialist services and these include liaison psychiatry (Dr Maria Clarke), intensive care psychiatry (Dr Philip Joseph), rehabilitation services (Professor Peter Tyrer), substance misuse services (Dr Mike McPhillips), psychotherapy (Dr Heiner Schuff) and a large psychology department (Mr Philip Tata).
All trainees have regular supervision with their consultant trainer, there is an active academic programme led by the Academic Department of Psychiatry which has both a research and clinical focus. Consultant trainers at St Mary’s Hospital place great emphasis on trainees regular involvement in the weekly academic meeting, weekly liaison peer group supervision, and supervision for psychodynamic and cognitive therapy short and long cases. Trainees also have access to the psychosexual disorders clinic run in the psychology department by arrangement with the local tutor. A staff grade psychiatrist has responsibility for patients on the locked ward, irrespective of the patient’s catchment area address.
Recent refurbishment on the top floor of the Paterson Centre has provided a comfortable en-suite on-call doctors room. The Medical School library is close by, and the psychiatric texts there have recently been upgraded with the help of the chief librarian, to accord with the complete reading list recommended by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

ST MARY’S GENERAL ADULT AND OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY TRAINING SCHEME

RESEARCH

The Scheme has close links with the Department of Psychological Medicine at Imperial College, London.  Major studies are being conducted by distinguished academics in the field and they are keen to promote research interests amongst junior doctors, whilst recognising the constraints of the trainees’ working week.
