The St Mary’s Scheme offers training for doctors wishing to pursue a career in psychiatry. The Scheme provides a full range of teaching, including experience in psychotherapy and research at CT1-3 level. The majority of posts are situated in north west and west London with further opportunities at Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire. Opportunities exist for experience in: general adult psychiatry including community, liaison, rehabilitation and substance misuse, psychiatry of old age, child and adolescent psychiatry, learning disability, forensic psychiatry, psychotherapy and clinical research.
The Scheme is overseen by a Tutors’ Committee under the Chairmanship of the Programme Director, Dr Rizkar Amin. Members are Local and Specialty tutors, Junior Doctor Representatives and Scheme’s Manager. The trainees and trainers are well supported by two full time administrative staff.
Every large site has a designated College Tutor (approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists) who organises local case conferences, journal clubs, and guest speakers. The scheme also organises good exam oriented courses including critical appraisal training, OSCE practice and PMP/IPA exam practice twice yearly immediately prior to exams. Our trainees achieve success at the MRCPsych examination well above the national average.
Junior doctors are encouraged to meet on a regular basis and all new trainees are actively encouraged to attend meetings and events organised by the Junior Doctor’s Committee.
